I would agree, you need to have 1500 to 2000 monthly to live a nice western quality of life in the Phils. You can live on less, but you have to be willing to sacrifice quality of life. Your home will be less, the quality of the food will be less, etc. The area you choose also affects your cost. And upscale modern tourist areas and you'll pay more. Live in the province areas away from the cities, and you can pay a lot less.

To be safe, don't use a debit card. Just use an ATM card.....Set up the APP... I don't have an issue with BPI since 1990 .....Don't believe everything. Usually, family members are the scammers. BPI as a 1800.

I think being picky and cautious are two different things. Being picky means you may not like something from looks or taste. Being cautious is completely different. All should know of the bacteria here even if you have a strong immune system. Theres food called PagPag here that sells in a variety of places like street food and calenderias. The word PagPag means food that was taken from garbage being thrown out by restaurants and sifted through to get meats and vegetables, then either recooking it with types of sauces or mixed with other things to consume. Its what some extremely poor do to survive as their food needs. Not saying all of these places do this, just know it is practiced in some areas. The other caution is tap water. Most likely, even the strongest immune system could get bacteria from the tap. Even some restaurants that didnt get their standard ice delivery, could have tap-ice. Always have some Loperamide (aka Imodium) with you. Each person has their own taste buds and can find some Filipino food horrible. Personally, there isnt much i dislike as I'm not picky. However, Balut and the smell of durian and fried dried fish makes me want to vomit. Lol The only true way to know your foods is to cook it yourself.

Your sweet spot is correct. Whether people want to believe it or not. My monthly budget is $1,800 and I do not have insurance. It would be $2,500 if I paid for health insurance. I chose to put that $700 in savings each month and keep it for emergencies. You can live on less, but your quality of life is less and you will not be caring well for your partner if you have one. Truth. Pay yourself first is good advice. You keep telling people about the health risks which are real so they can live a good life. Something will happen, it is not if, but when. Keep going on your story as it is correct about sweet spot.

Good point, I had emergency surgery in the Philippines that cost me $8,000. I recently had a similar surgery in the US and it cost $65,000. The difference is I had to pay the $8,000 cash in the Philippines but my insurance covered the $65,000 in the US. You have to have cash for emergencies in the Philippines.

I don't like Filipino food, ate breakfast one morning at Under ground resturant in Dumaguete, when I looked at the late I saw a large piece of egg shell on the egg, I informed the waitress she took my plate to the back came back and the shell was gone, it's obvious she removed the egg shell rather than frying anothe egg. I never went back to that resturant.

How can you be a picky eater, the Filipino food is terrible, I've been to many Filipino resturants, the food is unsanitary, flies, roaches, rats crawling everywhere, as an expat I usually get diarhea twice a month, I only eta packaged foods until I go back to the USA.

The order cannot be messed up when I go to the kiosk and punch in the order myself. However, they can mess up preparing it. I am fortunate that they have never messed up preparing it (probably because I get standard items, no special requests).

Steve: Ex-Mcdonald's Licensee Supervisor here. In the US, I don't do "Grills" or "Special Orders" at any Fast Food Restaurant. I only order items as they normally come. That, to me is the best way not to get my Order messed up. Before I used App ordering, 1 in 4 of my orders would be taken incorrectly. Then 1 in 10 would be filled incorrectly. I expect Fast Food will be just as incompetent in the Philippines, in different ways.
